A picture from the Mainland-Unst Ferry.

Here’s a picture from the Mainland-Unst Ferry.

Journeyed north and really enjoyed the bits of ‘the road’ that are by water. But also enjoyed the snow on the hills, the sunset and the kamikazi sheep.

Arrived in Unst at about six o’clock and spent an age finding the right Saxa Vord accommodation, but eventually did and it was warm. So what it lacked (wi-fi, reception for my mobile and a lack of tv stations – probably my inability but I could only access ‘BBC Parliament’) was made up for in the fact that I could get on with the music and set up a little working studio.

So I composed a tune based on ‘the road’ theme that had emerged earlier that day with the HNC students.

The main idea that I used came from thinking about ‘the road is always the same, it’s the scenery that changes’. Well I’m not sure that I exactly agree with that, but like the idea of something that is not changing while other things change around it. So I tried an idea of a rhythm that is constant, but while around it the harmonies gradually change, like going up and down hills. I will post it up when I have recorded it.

Slept well being able to enjoy the sleet and when it wasn’t sleeting look at the amazing number and clarity of stars.
